Muscat, May 13
The Oman Authority for Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance of Education (OAAAQA) held a media briefing to review its achievements and strategic projects, and to enhance levels of transparency and partnership.
Dr Jokha bint Abdullah al Shukaili, Chairperson of the Oman Authority for Quality Assurance of Education, said that the Royal Decree No (12/2026) represented a new stage in the Authority’s path, through amending its name, establishing the National Centre for Measurement, and expanding its competencies to include vocational and technical education.
Dr Jokha explained that the Authority has undergone significant transformations in recent years, including the launch of the national system for school performance evaluation. To date, the performance evaluation of 100 government and private schools has been completed, with 58 reports published on its website. Furthermore, academic accreditation systems have been developed, and institutional and program accreditation processes have been executed. Institutional accreditation results currently stand at 22 accredited higher education institutions, three institutions with conditional accreditation, and two institutions under probation, alongside the accreditation of several academic programs.
OAAAQA has launched the National System for Evaluating School Performance, which aims to raise the standards of school education and ensure academic excellence by conducting comprehensive performance evaluations based on well-defined standards and indicators.
It targets 1,800 public and private schools, 39 higher education institutions, and 800 academic programmes that cater to more than one million students.
The evaluation process includes field visits by specialised teams and the preparation of detailed reports outlining strengths and areas for improvement in each school.
It provides the Ministry of Education with accurate data and performance indicators, helping to identify best practices to enhance the educational process and replace ineffective practices.
